Then they said to the king, "Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day."
It is wrong to condemn an "illegal" if the law making his acts illegal are morally unjustified. Daniel's fellow administrators had King Darius pass a law making it illegal for King Darius' subjects to pray to God during a thirty-day period. They were wrong to invoke the law against Daniel and demand that he be punished.
The anti-illegal immigration movement is advocating the enforcement of a similarly immoral law. Immigration law is essentially a closed door. Immigration waiting lists are 10 years long. Legal immigrants are told their status has changed or will changed without possibility of remaining legal. Illegal immigrants cannot become legal. As a result, most immigrants are made illegal by the law. Just as Daniel's enemies used an unjust law against him, the anti-illegal immigration movement are using an unjust law against immigrants. God called us to favor the poor, the orphans, the widows, and the immigrants. Hiding behind an unjust immigration law and claiming the high road puts us in the same boat as Daniel's accusers. Ignoring their error, we oppose God and invite their punishment upon ourselves.
At the king's command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions' den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.
